The Hayward Fishery opened in 1942 in Hayward, California by Gus Aguiar.

The business started as a store the Aguiars lived above in the 1940s and operated around the clock. As the story goes, someone would ring the bell late at night, and one of the Aguiars would come down to sell a quart of milk, bait, or other goods.

The restaurant came along almost by accident once Pete Rivers, Gus' son-in-law, took over. Pete loved to cook and began offering samples to fish market customers who wanted more and more. A couple of tables were added, then a lunch counter. But the place didn’t become a full-scale restaurant until after Pete’s death in 1977.

In its heyday, the fishery was a prominent fixture on the Hayward scene. Bands used to play there, and it was frequented regularly by professional athletes. Joe DiMaggio once told Michael Rivers, Gus' grandson, that he usually ate in, and the Fishery was one of just two places he liked to go.
