In April 1965, programming consultant Bill Drake crafted KHJ's top 40 format. The format, known as "Boss Radio", featured a restricted playlist and restrained commentary by announcers. The last song played on KHJ was "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley & His Comets. On February 1, 1986, at midnight, the station adopted new call letters KRTH and switched formats.
