When the Boston Breakers were unable to secure a lease in any of the larger stadiums in the Boston area following the 1983 season, the team was moved to New Orleans where they played in the spacious Superdome, also home to the NFL's Saints. The team was a success in New Orleans, boasting some of the league's highest attendance numbers, however after the season, the league owners decided to move the season to the fall starting in 1986. Knowing that the Breakers could not hope to compete with the Saints, the ownership group opted to move before the team to Portland rather than play a lame duck season in New Orleans.
