Howard Johnson's

Howard Johnson's began in 1925 when Howard Deering Johnson opened a small soda fountain and ice cream stand in Quincy, Massachusetts, famously offering 28 distinct flavors of ice cream. The company revolutionized the food industry by pioneering the restaurant franchise model, expanding rapidly along American highways with its iconic, bright orange-roofed buildings. By the 1960s and 1970s, it had grown into the largest restaurant chain in the United States, serving as an essential staple of American travel culture. However, facing stiff competition from fast-food giants, the brand steadily declined until its very last remaining restaurant in Lake George, New York, closed in 2022. This piece of apparel is part of our Restaurant Chains Collection.
