Glen Echo Park

In the early 20th century an amusement park named Glen Echo Park opened in Glen Echo, Maryland. The amusement park was one of the larger establishments of its type in the Washington, D.C. area, and was very popular well into the late 1940s. By the mid-1950s, however, attendance began to decline due to the growing popularity of larger regional theme parks, such as Disneyland, and also because of the proliferation of new retail products that children of the baby boom generation could use during their leisure time. Another blow to the park occurred in January 1962 when the trolley line from Washington, D.C. ceased operation. The amusement park managed to continue operations for a few more warm-weather seasons, including the spring and summer of 1968 during which time customers did not know they were experiencing the final days of the amusement park’s rides. The owner finally announced on April 1, 1969 that the previous season had been its last and it would not reopen.
