WHFS - Bethesda, MD

WHFS was a legendary Washington DC-area radio station that began broadcasting from Bethesda, Maryland, and became known for its adventurous approach to music. Beginning in the late 1960s and 1970s, WHFS earned a devoted following with free-form progressive rock before later becoming one of the country’s most influential alternative-rock stations. The station helped introduce generations of listeners to emerging artists while becoming famous for its DJs, unconventional programming, and the annual HFStival concerts. For longtime listeners, the WHFS call letters remain synonymous with an era when FM radio could be unpredictable, local, and driven by a genuine passion for music.
