Columbus, Mississippi

Columbus, Mississippi, is the county seat of Lowndes County and one of the state’s most historic communities, located along the Tombigbee River. Founded in 1821, the city grew into an important center for river trade, agriculture, industry, and transportation in northeast Mississippi. Columbus is known for its historic homes and downtown, Mississippi University for Women, and its connection to playwright Tennessee Williams, who was born there in 1911. Today, the city blends more than two centuries of history with the character and traditions of Mississippi’s Golden Triangle.
