Sambo's was an American pancake house and diner chain founded in Santa Barbara, California, in 1957 by Sam Battistone Sr. and Newell Bohnett. Although the name combined the founders' names, the company capitalized on its association with the children's book The Story of Little Black Sambo by decorating its walls with images of a dark-skinned boy and tigers. Known for its cheap 10-cent coffee and family-friendly prices, the chain boomed, peaking at more than 1,100 locations across 47 states by 1979. However, the business collapsed into bankruptcy by 1981 following years of heavy competition and lawsuits regarding the name's racial connotations. This piece of apparel is part of our Restaurant Chains Collection.
