Bells Supermarket first opened in Buffalo, New York in 1954 and expanded throughout Western New York. Bells was pioneering in no-name merchandise, the creators of the Whammy Weenie, and was one of the "Big Three" supermarkets in the 1970s and 80s grocery landscape that also included Super Duper and Tops Friendly Markets.

All Bells closed when the company filed for bankruptcy in 1993, and many former Bells locations were gobbled up by Quality Markets, among others.
