Licorice Pizza

Licorice Pizza Records & Tapes was a Southern California institution for music fans during the 1970s and 1980s, beginning with its first store in Long Beach in 1969. Founded by James Greenwood, the chain became known for its huge selection of records and tapes, knowledgeable employees, free licorice, and stores where customers could hang out and discover new music. Licorice Pizza eventually grew to 34 Southern California locations, becoming a familiar part of the region’s music culture before being sold and acquired by Musicland in 1986. The Licorice Pizza name subsequently disappeared as the stores were converted to other Musicland brands, particularly Sam Goody.
