Oxford, Mississippi

Oxford, Mississippi, is the county seat of Lafayette County and one of the state’s best-known college towns. Founded in 1837 and named for Oxford, England, the community’s founders hoped it would become a center of education—a vision strengthened when the University of Mississippi opened there in 1848. Oxford is also renowned for its literary heritage, particularly its association with Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner and his home, Rowan Oak. Today, the historic Square, Ole Miss traditions, restaurants, bookstores, and vibrant arts scene give Oxford a character all its own.
