Woolworth's
Woolworth’s was a fixture of downtowns and shopping districts for generations, beginning with Frank W. Woolworth’s first successful five-and-dime store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1879. Shoppers remember its seemingly endless assortment of inexpensive household goods, toys, candy, clothing and notions, along with the Woolworth lunch counter, where generations stopped for sandwiches, sodas and other inexpensive meals. At its height in the 1950s, Woolworth operated roughly 2,800 stores nationwide, making the red Woolworth signs a familiar sight across America. After years of competition from larger discount retailers, the company closed its remaining U.S. Woolworth stores in 1997, ending an American retail tradition that had lasted more than a century.
