Blue Chip Stamps

Blue Chip Stamps were a popular trading-stamp program introduced in 1956 as a competitor to S&H Green Stamps. Customers received the blue stamps when shopping at participating grocery stores, gas stations, and other retailers, then pasted them into savings books that could be redeemed for merchandise at Blue Chip redemption centers. The program became especially popular during the 1960s and 1970s, when trading stamps were a major part of American retailing and families often saved books of stamps for household goods, appliances, and gifts. As trading stamps declined in popularity, Blue Chip Stamps gradually faded from everyday shopping, but they remain a nostalgic reminder of mid-20th-century American consumer culture.
