Caldor
American Retro Apparel

Caldor was a popular discount department store chain founded in 1951 by Carl and Dorothy Bennett in Port Chester, New York, with its name combining the first three letters of their first names. Known for its slogan, “Where Shopping Is Always a Pleasure,” Caldor became a familiar destination for families throughout the northeastern United States, offering clothing, toys, electronics, housewares, and seasonal merchandise at affordable prices. During its peak in the 1990s, the chain operated more than 150 stores across several states, competing with retailers such as Bradlees, Kmart, and Walmart. Financial difficulties and increasing competition eventually led to Caldor's bankruptcy and the closure of its remaining stores in 1999, ending nearly five decades of retail history. This piece of apparel is part of our Department & Discount Stores Collection.
