Fort Gaines is a historic coastal fortification located on the eastern tip of Dauphin Island, Alabama, overlooking the entrance to Mobile Bay. Construction began in 1821, and the fort became one of the major military fortifications along the Gulf Coast, helping protect the strategically important shipping routes leading into Mobile Bay. Situated directly across the bay's entrance from Fort Morgan on Mobile Point, the two forts formed a powerful defensive system guarding one of the Gulf Coast's most important harbors. During the Civil War, Fort Gaines played a significant role in the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864, when Union Admiral David Farragut led his fleet past the Confederate defenses. Today, Fort Gaines remains a popular historic attraction, featuring original cannons, tunnels, and preserved fortifications that offer visitors a glimpse into Alabama's rich military history. This piece of apparel is part of out Alabama Landmarks & Parks Collection.
