Fort Pickens is a historic coastal fortification located on the western end of Santa Rosa Island near Pensacola, Florida, overlooking the entrance to Pensacola Bay. Constructed between 1829 and 1834, the massive brick fortress became one of the major military forts along the Gulf Coast, designed to protect Pensacola Harbor and the strategically important Pensacola Navy Yard. During the Civil War, Fort Pickens remained under Union control despite Florida's secession, making it one of the few Southern forts never captured by Confederate forces. The fort continued to serve military purposes through World War II and is also remembered for holding the Apache leader Geronimo and other Apache prisoners during the 1880s. Today, Fort Pickens is preserved as part of Gulf Islands National Seashore, where visitors can explore its impressive fortifications and experience nearly two centuries of American military history. This piece of apparel is part of out Florida Landmarks & Parks Collection.
