The Lodi Crushers began play in the California League in 1966 as a Chicago Cubs affiliate. In 1969, they switched their affiliation to the Oakland A's. The following year, they switched again, this time to the San Diego Padres, and changed their name to the Lodi Padres.

After the 1983 season, the franchise, now known as the Lodi Dodgers, became a Cubs farm team again, and the club returned to its original name. However, the team's affiliation with the Cubs lasted only one season. Unable to affiliate with a big league club in 1985, the Crushers sat out the season, and the team moved to Southern California and became the Ventura County Gulls in 1986.
