Service Merchandise

Service Merchandise began in Pulaski, Tennessee, in 1934 and grew into one of America’s best-known catalog showroom retailers. The chain offered jewelry, electronics, housewares, toys, sporting goods, and other merchandise, with customers often selecting items from displays and picking them up from a separate merchandise counter. At its peak, Service Merchandise operated hundreds of stores nationwide and generated billions of dollars in annual sales. Increasing competition from discount retailers and changing shopping habits eventually took their toll, and the company closed its remaining stores in 2002.
