Fort Massachusetts
American Retro Apparel
Fort Massachusetts is a historic coastal fortification located on West Ship Island, approximately 12 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Construction began in 1859 as part of a federal effort to protect the strategically important shipping routes leading to New Orleans and the Mississippi River. During the Civil War, Union forces occupied Ship Island and used it as a major staging area for military operations along the Gulf Coast, including the campaign to capture New Orleans in 1862. Completed after the war, the massive brick fort remains one of Mississippi's most distinctive historic landmarks and is now preserved as part of Gulf Islands National Seashore, where visitors can explore its impressive architecture and fascinating military history. This shirt is part our Mississippi Landmarks & Parks Collection.
