WLIR - Long Island, NY
American Retro Apparel

WLIR was a legendary Long Island radio station that became one of America’s most influential alternative-rock stations during the 1980s. Broadcasting from Garden City, New York, WLIR adopted its groundbreaking “New Music” format in 1982 and helped introduce American listeners to artists such as U2, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Duran Duran, and New Order. The station became famous for discovering and playing new wave and alternative music well before many mainstream American stations embraced those sounds. Although the original WLIR era eventually ended amid ownership and frequency changes, its influence on alternative radio and 1980s music culture remains widely remembered.
